How To Make Italian Sesame Subs (Panini al Sesamo)

These sesame buns are very soft and easy to make, try our recipe.




YIELD: Makes around 10  buns
  • 3 cups of plain flour
  • 1/3 cup of sugar
  • 240 ml water
  • 200 ml milk
  • 1 1/2 stick of butter
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 yolk beaten, or melted butter as needed
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp honey
  • pinch salt
  • sesame seeds as needed



1. Dissolve the yeast and honey in 40 ml warm water, leave until the surface of the mixture is frothy. Now add the beaten egg.
2. In a medium saucepan combine the milk and the rest of the water.
Place on medium heat. Add the butter and sugar.
Remove from heat once the butter has melted.
Dissolve the yeast mixture into the milk and butter mixture.
3. Sieve the flour and place it in a bowl, make a well in the center of the flour and add the yeast, milk and butter mixture.
4.Start kneading into a smooth dough.
Knead by hand or in a dough mixer for at least 10 minutes.
Now cover the dough and leave to rise for at least 2 to 3 hours or until doubled in size.
5. Shape the dough into equal sized balls and leave to rest for 30 minutes.
6. Now spread the buns with yolk or melted butter and then the sesame seeds.
7. Bake in a preheated oven at 356 F until light golden brown in colour.
