OSSA DEI MORTI (BONES OF THE DEAD SWEET RECIPE)

Ossa dei morti are typical sweets which are consumed in Sicily in occasion of November 2nd, day dedicated to the commemoration of dead people.


Otherwise known as moscardini or cruzziteddi they have an original and unusual aspect characterized by the double coloration, white/white above and dark below.

This result is obtained by separating the two main ingredients that make up the cookie: flour and sugar.

 

 

 

 

 

YIELD: Makes 20
INGREDIENTS:
  • 6.61 oz  sugar
  • 7.4 oz plain flour
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 57.5 ml water

 

 

METHOD:
1. Combine the flour with the clove powder
2. Place the sugar and water in a saucepan on low heat. Let the sugar dissolve.
3. Once the sugar starts to boil, turn off the flame and add all the flour. Stir with a wooden spoon. Let the mixture cool down a bit.
4. Transfer to a working surface and knead into a compact dough.
5. Form the dough into a log.
6. Cut the log into equal pieces each measuring around 3 cm.
7. Place pieces on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Cover and let dry for 1 to 2 days.
8. Bake in a preheated oven at 320 F for 20 minutes.
